On September 20, 1776, the Great Fire of New York devastated a quarter of the city. In the months prior, the army under George Washington had repeatedly threatened to burn New York City, rather than let the British seize it. The fire started six days after the Crown’s forces took the city. The actual cause of the fire, however, remains a mystery.
