Garden of the Month: 1800's home in Coeymans Hollow

COEYMANS HOLLOW―The Clematis Garden Club has awarded its Garden of the Month award and certificate to Kim and Ken Slingerland of Route 143 in Coeymans Hollow.

Their property was purchased in 2004 and consists of a beautiful 1800's home on four acres. They have renovated the house and constructed a beautifully tiered garden with stone walls.  

In front, fenced walkway is lined with pollinator plants including Salvia, Hosta, Ferns, Black Eyed Susans and Yarrow. The front of the home is surrounded by beautiful flower beds continuing around the side and edged by a lovely split rail fence along with Hydrangeas, Peony, Lily Of The Valley and potted grasses.

Stone steps in the back descend showcasing even more beautiful gardens along the stone walls including Cone Flowers, Hosta, Rose Bushes and creeping flocks leading to an inviting sunroom and overlooking the pool area. In a corner is a huge grapevine, a gift from Kim's father, along with blackberries and crabapples.

A large, elevated redwood arbor with fieldstone pillars is a favorite gathering place.  A stream that runs through the property is lined with grasses, Hosta and lilies along with a massive almond tree, another gift from Kim's father. A future project to expand the bridge over the stream is planned. This hardworking couple has truly earned the Garden of the Month distinction.

The Clematis Garden Club consists of 50 members hailing from Greene, Schoharie and Albany counties.

The club meets on the third Friday of the month at 1 p.m. at Legion Hall on Maple Avenue in Greenville. Guests are warmly welcomed.  For information, call Jean Horn at 518-966-4260.
