The Freedom Riders MC in Athens, was founded in 1988 and is the mother charter of the club, with another chapter in Corinth. For decades, the Freedom Riders were known throughout our area for their Toy Runs, charity rides, and fundraising efforts for local families and organizations.
Over the years, the club has lost some great members, while others have gotten older and aren't able to do everything they once did. But through it all, the Freedom Riders never stopped supporting their community. Their commitment to helping others remained strong.
Now, the club is entering an exciting new chapter. Over the past couple of years, the Freedom Riders have welcomed younger members who are bringing new energy to the club while carrying on the traditions established by those who came before them. The result is a club that's finding its way back to something it has always done so well—using the strength of its brotherhood and the motorcycle community to help the people who need it.
Their first new major charity event will be the Alyssa Run on Sunday, October 18. Alyssa Engler of Greenville is just 34 years old and has been battling Stage 4 breast cancer. She has been unable to work for nearly a year and has faced the tremendous expense of traveling back and forth to Massachusetts for treatment.
Through all of this, she has also been raising her young son, who has been facing this difficult journey right alongside his mother. Yet despite everything Alyssa is going through, she wants to share the money raised with 4-year-old Lavender Moon, who is battling an inoperable brain tumor. Lavender and her family will also be at the ride and barbecue.
For the Freedom Riders, this event represents much more than another motorcycle ride. It marks a return to an important part of the club's history—a tradition of stepping up, helping families, and taking care of their community.
It's exciting to see longtime members and a younger generation coming together to carry that tradition forward. The Freedom Riders have always been more than motorcycles; they've been brothers, friends, neighbors, and members of the community who are willing to show up when someone needs help.
I know I speak for all of us in the local motorcycle community when I say it's great to see the Freedom Riders growing and getting back to doing what they've been known and respected for over the decades.
So please come out on Sunday, October 18 and be part of it. Meet up starts at 11 a.m., and the ride leaves the Freedom Riders MC clubhouse at 44 Flats Road in Athens at noon, followed by a BBQ and benefit at 2 p.m. back at their clubhouse.
The suggested donation is $20 per person or $30 per couple. All makes and styles of motorcycles are welcome, and you don't have to ride to attend.
Come out, support Alyssa and Lavender, support their families, and support a motorcycle club that has become an institution in our area, as it once again shows what it means to take care of its own community.
