Tiny Art Galleries are returning to Palenville this month

PALENVILLE―Inspiring the masters like Thomas Cole and Frederick Church, Palenville is widely considered to be America’s first artist colony. Today, creativity continues to flourish in the Catskills hamlet with the installation of five new art galleries. Miniature art galleries, that is.

Known as Tiny Art Galleries, the project is organized by Palenville The Hamlet, a volunteer community service group that provides opportunities for local artists while emphasizing the hamlet’s role in art history.

For a fourth year, these brightly colored and delightfully charming boxes will once again be stationed around Palenville and hold miniature, original works by local artists. Anyone is welcome to take one piece for free, explained Joyce Federman, who chairs the project along with Adrianna Theriault and Jill Burkholder.

Some of those works are that of Federman, Theriault and Burkholder, while others are the talents of local artists who submit pocket-sized paintings, pieces of pottery, little quilts and more. Each piece, no larger than 3x3 inches, also contains the artist’s name and contact information.

This year, gallery boxes can be found August 8-23 at Triangle Gallery at the intersection of Routes 23A and 32A, Mill Lane Miniatures at 63 Mill Lane, Circle W Gallery at 3328 Route 23A, Neuron Gallery at 3292 Route 23A and the Palenville Library at 144 Malden Avenue. All of the locations are within walking distance.

This Saturday, to kick off the exhibit, there will be a “Make and Take” art project. All are welcome at the Palenville Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make art for the tiny art galleries. Materials and refreshments will be supplied.
