Fire ravages Surprise home, two hospitalized

GREENVILLE―Multiple area departments responded late Friday night to a large house fire that left two people hospitalized.

Greene County 911 dispatched firefighters at 10:42 p.m. for a working structure fire at 519 King Hill Earlton Road in the Greenville hamlet of Surprise.

Along with Greenville, eight other fire departments responded to the blaze, including Westerlo, Freehold, Earlton, Medway-Grapeville, Cairo, East Durham, Round Top and Oak Hill-Durham. Ambulances from Greenville, Durham and Coxsackie also responded, along with Greene County Paramedics.

According to the Greenville Volunteer Fire Department, the fire is currently under investigation by the Greene County Fire Investigation Team.

“The homeowners were transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Their condition is unknown at this time,” the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company reported Saturday morning.

Firefighters were on scene until about 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The Greenville Volunteer Fire Company thanked all responding members and departments, stating, “Your assistance, teamwork, and support were greatly appreciated during this challenging operation.” They also asked the community to “keep the homeowners, firefighters, and all those affected in your thoughts.”
