Sometimes, a community is at its very best when one of its own is hurting the most. Sandi Cross, owner of 2 Twisted Ladies Ice Cream at 618 Main Street in Cairo, has become a familiar and much-loved face not only in Cairo, but throughout Greene County. Her beautifully decorated ice cream shop, along with the portable shop she and her family bring to community events, has brought smiles to countless people young and young at heart.
This was Sandi’s dream, and anyone who has visited knows just how much love she has poured into it.
On Tuesday, September 1, Sandi and her family’s world was turned upside down when her beloved husband, Brian Cross, tragically passed away in a freak motorcycle accident. Brian was a well-known and respected member of our community—a loving husband, father and friend.
After retiring a year ago as a supervisor with the New York State Department of Transportation, Brian continued working hard through his own tree cutting business and alongside Sandi at 2 Twisted Ladies Ice Cream. He was a provider, a hard worker, and a man who took great pride in everything he built with his own two hands.
There are no words that can take away the pain Sandi and her family are facing right now. Because of their tremendous loss, 2 Twisted Ladies Ice Cream will be closing early for the 2026 season. But before they close, there is something our community can do.
They will be open Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., selling the remaining ice cream stock from this season. Quarts will be just $7, all flavors.
So, come have some ice cream—but more importantly, come show some love. Stop by, bring your family, enjoy a quart or two, and let Sandi and her family know that they are not standing alone at this terrible time.
Sometimes we don't have the right words, and sometimes there is nothing we can say to make things better. But simply showing up, offering a hug, sharing a kind word, and reminding someone that their community is behind them can mean more than we will ever know.
If you would like to do even more, the family has also established a GoFundMe (gofundme.com/f/celebrating-brians-life-and-love-for-family) to help with the unexpected financial burden that comes with such a heartbreaking loss.
Everyone here at Porcupine Soup, sends our deepest sympathy out to Sandi, her family, Brian’s friends, and everyone who loved him. Let's come together, enjoy some ice cream, and show this family just how much their community cares.
