CATSKILL―An estimated 150 kids who spent the afternoon at the Back-to-School Community BBQ at Hop-O-Nose left with smiles, memories and backpacks filled with school supplies.

The free annual event was held Saturday, bringing together families, local organizations, law enforcement, and community members to give kids a day of summer fun and help prepare them for the upcoming start of a new school year.

“This isn't merely a barbecue,” said Adrianna Winters, who took over co-organizing the event last year with Shirle Cross.

“It's a vibrant community celebration where we distribute essential school supplies, backpacks, and other generously donated items to children in need,” Winters explained.

The day included music with DJ Jr. Rock, a basketball tournament, activities, bounce houses and a water slide, giveaways and delicious food.

“This is for the kids,” said Sadie Wilburn, a grandmother of 24, who started the event a dozen years ago.

“It has been a great success every year,” Wilburn said.

Winters noted many people struggle with the cost of school supplies and are unable to spend extra money on family outings or vacations. The annual barbecue helps with both.

“We are incredibly fortunate to receive significant contributions from numerous local businesses, making this event a true reflection of our community's collective effort to uplift its youth,” Winters said.

Among the major sponsors were the Catskill Housing Authority, Mid-Hudson Fiber, A&G Amusements, Ginsberg’s Foods, Catskill PTA, Woodstock Way, Nails by Nessa, and Davis Property Maintenance, along with many other local businesses who donated items, food or gift cards.

As the first day of school approaches, Winters said they wanted to bring the community together to celebrate students, encourage them, and ensure they know they have the support of the people around them. This year, the barbecue welcomed families from across the community, she noted.

“I just love the kids,” Winters said. “To see them smile makes me happy.”
