GREENE COUNTY―At least two people were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following separate enforcement actions on Wednesday in Windham and Tannersville, according to the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement.
The organization confirmed that shortly before 8 a.m. a “raid involving multiple agents in vests, with rifles and an unmarked dark blue Dodge Durango” took place near the Sunoco gas station on Main Street in Tannersville.
“While reports to our rapid response hotline indicate that there were likely more individuals detained by ICE, we have 100 percent confirmed the detention of two individuals at this time: one in Tannersville and one in Windham,” Bryan MacCormack, co-executive director of the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement said Friday.
“The raid in Windham was a vehicle raid, which is the most common form of raid in our region under this administration,” MacCormack added, referring to a reported traffic stop in the area of State Route 23 also around 8 a.m.
MacCormack described one of the men as a respected local business owner and the other as a father of three. Both are being detained by ICE at Montgomery County Jail, he said.
The enforcement action in Tannersville, according to the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement, occurred in front of children on a school bus and MacCormack said “there was substantial trauma caused.”
Founded in 2016, the Hudson-based Columbia County Sanctuary Movement “organizes with immigrants and allies to collectively support, empower, and defend our communities.” The non-profit maintain a hotline to report ICE raids or detentions and post local ICE activity on their Facebook page.
The last time the group reported ICE being in Greene County was January of 2025 when agents detained two men at a Cairo worksite.
ICE, that operates under the United States Department of Homeland Security, has not confirmed Wednesday’s enforcement actions on the mountaintop or responded to a request for comment.
