Only minor injuries reported after car struck by train

CATSKILL―Two people suffered only minor injuries when their vehicle was struck by a train in Catskill on Tuesday morning.
It happened around 10:30 a.m. at the non-gated crossing behind Haines Garage off Maple Avenue.
According to the Catskill Fire Company, a CSX locomotive collided with a passenger vehicle when it pulled in front of the train that was entering the crossing area.
“Luckily, both driver and passenger appeared to have minor injuries despite taking a direct hit,” the Catskill Fire Company reported.
The train, the fire company said, came to a complete stop with the lead engine approximately one-eighth of a mile past the crossing.
“When you approach a non-gated crossing, it is on you as the driver to stop, look, and listen,” the fire company reminded motorists. “A train physically cannot and will not stop for you.”
It is estimated that around 2,100 cars are struck by trains each year in the United States, resulting in hundreds of injuries and more than 200 deaths annually.
