15-year-old charged with murder of elderly woman

SAUGERTIES―Authorities are still tight-lipped on details surrounding the murder of a woman in West Camp and the 15-year-old suspect charged with the crime.
According to the Saugerties Police Department, officers responded shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 to a location on John Schultz Road after receiving information about a possible homicide.
A 15-year-old male from Saugerties was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
Neither the teen nor the victim have been publicly identified by authorities. However, the Times Union quoted Saugerties Police Chief Kenneth J. Swart, Jr. as saying the woman was 88 years old.
The teen was initially arraigned on Sunday in the Town of Saugerties Justice Court and remanded to a secure facility without bail.
Court records show the teen was arraigned again in Ulster County Court on Monday afternoon in front of Judge Bryan Rounds. Represented by the Ulster County Public Defender’s Office, the teen pleaded not guilty and was remanded back to a secure facility.
The teen is due back in county court on Friday morning for a hearing.
An investigation ensued with the assistance of the New York State Police, Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, and Ulster County Child Advocacy Center.
Additional charges are expected, Saugerties Police said.
West Camp, a small hamlet of less than 100 people within the town of Saugerties, is located about a mile south of the Greene County line.
