CATSKILL―A mother and her boyfriend are now both charged with murder in the beating death of a three-year-old girl.

Already behind bars, Lameik Shakur Wilson, 24, and Farhiya Gaal, 26, were indicted Monday by a Greene County grand jury on elevated charges, including second-degree murder, according to the Greene County District Attorney’s Office.

Wilson is additionally charged with first-degree manslaughter, reckless assault of a child, second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Gaal is also charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree perjury and endangering the welfare of a child.

It was around 4:14 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, that Greene County 911 dispatched police and EMS to an apartment at 579 Main Street in Cairo for a report of a three-year-old girl found unconscious and bleeding from the mouth.

The child, later identified as Fay Mohamed, was noted to have multiple visible injuries and was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Albany Medical Center, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office reported. She underwent several surgeries but remained in critical condition.

Mohamed passed away shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25 after being taken off life support the prior afternoon.

Greene County District Attorney Joseph Stanzione has called the crime a “horrific offense” and said that Mohamed “was beaten and abused beyond comprehension.”

Wilson was arrested by the Greene County Sheriff's Office on January 29 and initially charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Gaal, the child’s mother, was in a relationship with Wilson at the time of the assault. Authorities had said that Gaal was reportedly at a job interview when Wilson allegedly attacked her daughter.

But following Mohamed’s death, on Wednesday, March 4, Gaal was arrested by the sheriff’s office on the charge of second-degree manslaughter.

“New evidence was then revealed through the continued investigation by both the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney’s office. This matter was then presented to the grand jury of Greene County for consideration whereupon Chief Assistant Jeffrey Low, together with assistants Kristine Kline and Monica Kenny-Keff, presented their evidence to the grand jury,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement Monday.

Both Wilson and Gaal are already remanded to the Greene County Jail without bail and will be arraigned in Greene County Court on the elevated charges at a date soon to be set.

While Wilson resided in Cairo, Stanzione noted that he is not originally from the area. Wilson and Gaal hail from Rochester.

This is a developing story and additional details will be reported when they are available.
