Man shot, killed by troopers in Purling

PURLING―A man was shot and killed by police Monday night after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a state trooper.

It happened around 8:22 p.m. while State Police were responding to a report of an assault involving two men at Whip-O-Will Campground on Route 31.

Upon arrival, State Police say they located the victim of the reported assault, who had sustained a head injury. The victim directed troopers to a nearby camper within the campground where the other male party was reportedly located.

“As troopers approached the camper, a male subject exited while holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. The subject pointed the apparent handgun at a trooper and continued advancing toward him. The trooper then discharged his duty weapon, striking the subject,” State Police said in a statement Tuesday morning.

State Police said that troopers immediately rendered medical aid and requested emergency medical services, but the man was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

The identities of those involved are being withheld at this time pending next of kin notifications and will be released in a subsequent update, according to State Police.

The New York State Attorney’s General’s Office and the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) are investigating the shooting.  Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at 845-344-5300.
