To the editor:

In the words of John Quincy Adams, “Wherever the standard of freedom and independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions, and her prayers be.” Burned, trampled, and reviled by a few, but beloved by the vast majority, our American flag has been this country’s symbol of freedom since its inception.

Recognized and respected worldwide, it continues to wave due only to those brave Americans who have defended it both here and abroad, giving their lives in the process if necessary. In this, the 250th year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we need to take time to remember sacrifices and successes, to celebrate our good fortune of being born in America, and to thank those who created this historic document.

Unfurling our flag at every opportunity should be your top priority as an American, followed closely by a salute to those who have fought so valiantly to keep it aloft.

May our memories of them forever continue, and may their valor serve as examples to our young Americans.
