To the editor:

Called the “Father of the American Navy,” John Paul Jones once stated that “America has been the Country of my fond election from the age of thirteen when I first saw it. I had the honour to hoist with my own hands the Flag of Freedom the first time it was displayed, on the Delaware; and I have attended it with veneration ever since on the ocean.”

The flag of the United States of America has flown over wars both internal and external and has seen the vanquishing of evil beyond description. This “Flag of Freedom” has borne witness to Americans answering the call to serve by laying down their lives in battle so that others might also exist with freedom and equality. This same call to serve has driven our military forces, police, firefighters, and EMS personnel to excel in their positions as they protect us, their fellow Americans. We owe them all our deepest respect.

In this, the 250th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we all must consider how different our lives would be had we not been born in this great country. Such divine intervention into each of our lives should never be taken for granted. On the contrary, it should be recognized, highly esteemed, and widely celebrated.
