COXSACKIE―The Greene County Women’s League Cancer Patient Aid (GCWL) is kicking off its third annual Cabin Fever event to support its mission of assisting Greene County cancer patients with medical expenses.
Slated for Saturday, March 14 at The Wire in downtown Coxsackie, the benefit is a fun filled afternoon of appetizers and desserts, music, raffles, auction items and entertainment from the An Clár School of Irish Dance.
“The goal is to raise more than last year, which was around $65,000,” explained Lisa Leone Beers, who is co-chairing the Cabin Fever event.
The GCWL traces its roots to 1970 after one of its founding members was diagnosed with cancer and quickly found out how much it cost to treat the disease.
Since then, the non-profit has been financially assisting anyone in Greene County who is battling cancer. They allow each patient $5,000 to pay for doctors, pharmacies, hospital bills, wigs, prosthetics, and other healthcare essentials.
More than 100 volunteer GCWL members work tirelessly throughout the year to raise much needed funds.
“We are currently assisting over 70 individuals in Greene County fighting cancer, which includes men, women and children,” Beers said.
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 40% of all men and women will get a form of cancer during their lifetime. Nearly two million people in the United States will be diagnosed this year alone and there are more than 17 million Americans living with cancer right now.
Doors to the Cabin Fever event open at noon and the afternoon runs from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $60 each by calling Beers at 518-755-4744 or Co-chair Cat Tice Jones at 518-821-6712.
