COXSACKIE―Sunday morning was a chilly 35 degrees but that didn’t stop dozens of people from freezin’ for a reason.
The Greene County YMCA held its second annual Plunge for a Purpose fundraiser at Riverside Park where some 30 brave souls stripped down into shorts, tank tops and bathing suits for a dip in the Hudson River.
The idea is simple: get in, get out, and get into warm clothes―as soon as possible.
Michele Johnson, wellness director at the Greene County YMCA, came up with the idea last year when she was trying to think of a different type of fundraiser that more people could take part in.
The first Plunge for a Purpose, held last January at the Earlton Hill Campground lake, brought out around 39 participants.
This year’s plunge was originally scheduled for February, but frozen water over the park stairs made conditions potentially dangerous. And while polar plungers may be fearless, the YMCA prioritizes safety.
On hand were members of the State Police, Coxsackie Ambulance and Athens Fire Department Dive Team. Johnson also thanked Mayor Mark Evans, the Coxsackie-Athens Rotary Club and What A Hoot Committee for helping make the event a success.
Money raised will support Membership For All, helping make YMCA programs accessible for everyone in the community regardless of their financial situation.
Johnson said she will announce next year’s location as soon as it is determined.
“Greene County is so large, I am trying to do different locations to give everyone the opportunity to participate in an event close to home,” she said.
