HUNTER―Travelers heading up, or down, the mountain should expect delays starting next week as the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) works to replace a culvert beneath Route 23A.
Traffic signals are expected to be in place in the area of Kaaterskill Clove beginning on June 22, according to Hunter Town Supervisor Sean Mahoney.
“Due to the challenging conditions in this area, with a steep cliff on one side and a retaining wall on the other, traffic is expected to be reduced to alternating one-way traffic for the duration of the project,” Mahoney said.
The failing culvert is located near the retaining wall toward the lower section of Kaaterskill Clove, near the Catskill/Hunter town line, he explained.
“At this time, the project is estimated to take no longer than one month, although the contractor believes the work may be completed sooner,” Mahoney said.
According to NYSDOT, plans are also in development to replace the Route 23A bridge over Spruce Creek at Horseshoe Bend. Construction is not expected to begin until the spring of 2028, and completion is anticipated sometime over the winter of 2028-29.
