Columbia-Greene Humane Society makes plea for adopters

HUDSON―The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA is in urgent need of adopters to help make room at the shelter after nine dogs were recently brought in under difficult circumstances.

Those dogs all arrived within the last week from three different situations: two in Columbia County and one in New Baltimore.

And while they will always find a way to care for an animal in need, the organization says the sudden intake has created a serious shortage of available kennel space.

“That’s nine dogs in one week, on top of those already in our care and the normal stream of animals coming through our doors,” the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA said Thursday.

Bella and Luna, two pit bull mixes, arrived painfully thin, but with regular meals and care, they have already gained approximately ten pounds each. Their former owner is facing charges, according to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.

Diesel, a German Shepherd, was allegedly abandoned by his family. Charges are pending in that case.

Six black lab/pit mixes were removed from another residence in a case that remains under investigation, the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA said.

Additional details of those three cases were not released.

“Every dog adopted right now does two things. First, it changes the life of the dog who gets to leave with you, and second—but equally as important—it opens a kennel for another dog who may desperately need that space tomorrow,” the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA says.

Bella, Luna, Diesel and the six Lab/Pittie mixes all have sponsored adoption fees, and there are many other dogs at the shelter waiting for someone to take them home.
