William A. Galbraith, III passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 80 due to complications following a stroke earlier this year.
Bill was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, NY, and lived at Sleepy Hollow Lake in Athens, NY following his retirement.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His first career began in 1966 as a police officer in the Town of Poughkeepsie, where he retired as a sergeant in 1988. He then owned and operated TruFleet, Ltd, which maintained the fleet of police and other Town of Poughkeepsie office vehicles until his well-earned retirement in 2015.
Bill was a car guy: driving, fixing, building, and racing them. He enjoyed bird watching from his deck, boating, NASCAR, fishing, cruises, and was an expert at puttering around the house and garage. But most of all, he absolutely loved spending time with the large family he built.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary (nee Havens) of nearly 50 years; five children: Timothy (Mary), William, Scott (Susie), Michael (Juliette), Carrie (Robert Cowburn); twelve grandchildren: Cassidy, Matthew, Jamie, Christian, Olivia, Eli, Scott, Samantha, Ava, Sara, Madelyn, and Carter; and four great-grandchildren: Adelyn, Natalie, Hadley, and Jeremy.
There will be a celebration of Bill’s life on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (with a reflection at 2 p.m.) at the lodge at Sleepy Hollow Lake (Lisa Lane, Athens, NY 12015).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s honor to charities that were near and dear to him: the Bob Woodruff Foundation (bobwoodrufffoundation.org - supporting veterans and their families) and The Glioblastoma Foundation (glioblastomafoundation.org).
Funeral arrangements under the care of Robert Gaus of Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill. Messages of condolences may be made to TraverMc.com.
