Phyllis Coons, 87, of Catskill passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to her family.
She was known for her kind and caring nature, her sense of humor, and her strong will. Phyllis lived her life with authenticity and was never afraid to speak her mind. She was friendly and outgoing, making friends wherever she went and connecting easily with people from all walks of life. She had a strong sense of direction and was someone who naturally took the lead.
Phyllis loved meeting people and sharing ideas. She found joy in flea markets, artists, and everyday conversations with just about anyone. People were naturally drawn to talking with her, and she made others feel welcomed and cared for. Over the years, she worked as a waitress and toll collector, and enjoyed finding a good deal, bringing both determination and personality to everything she did. She worked hard and knew how to enjoy the moments of fun that life brought her way—whether on a trip with family and friends or dancing to live music.
Phyllis shared 55 years with her devoted partner, Kevin Kelly, with whom she built a life centered on family, care, support, and humor. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took great pride in supporting and encouraging those she loved.
She is survived by her partner Kevin Kelly; her daughter Debbie Backlund (husband, Peter Backlund Sr.); her grandchildren Peter, Matt (wife Laura), and Kristin Backlund; her great-grandchildren Sophia Banks and Aurora Backlund; and her brother Gary Francis (wife, Karen).
Of all the things in her life, her family was the most important to her. Phyllis Coons will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
Funeral arrangements are private and under the care of Breanna Lennon DelVecchio of Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, Catskill.
