Matthew “Matt” Frank Labuda, born on the first day of spring, March 20, 1960, in Catskill, NY to Selma “Sally” Richardson Labuda and Walter Labuda Sr., passed away at home on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

He lived at the same address in Grapeville for his entire life.

Matt graduated from Greenville Central School in 1978 and attended Columbia-Greene Community College. Matt worked as a logger for a few years until he found his true calling as a carpenter, specializing as a finish trim carpenter for over 30 years. He had the woodworking gene and loved spending time in his shop. He took pride in his perfectly mitered corners, window casings and unique picture frames. When any family member needed a home job done, Matt was the one that was called upon: two homes for his brother Walt, siding his sister’s Cape Cod bed and breakfast, impromptu back deck when Nikki moved into her new home. He gutted the house that he grew up in to update it for his own family. This job was never done but his presence will always be there.

Matt played on many softball teams back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. He started playing in the men’s softball leagues at the age of 12 with his brothers Walt and Joe. He used to say he put in his 20 years of softball. When Matt put his cleats away, he coached his girls’ CYL T-ball, minor league and girls’ softball teams. If he wasn’t coaching, he would volunteer to umpire.

Matt enjoyed staying at home and the simple life, an occasional vacation but nothing too far. He was always a Yankee fan, watching every night and the replay in the morning.

He is predeceased by his parents, father-in-law Donald Patterson and grandson Jace Matthew Czaplicki, and his trusty cat of 13 years Dusty.

His is survived by his wife of 45 years and one day, Donna Patterson Labuda; three daughters: Devon (fiancé Kyle Friedrich) in Spencerport, NY, Nicole “Nikki” Czaplicki (Andrew) Fredericksburg, VA, and Kyle (fiancé Daniel Coolidge) Keeseville, NY; grandsons Zane, Skye and Jude Czaplicki; granddaughters Callie and Louise Coolidge, along with our newest members Spencer and Penny Friedrich; brothers Walter Jr. of Port St. Lucie, FL and Joseph of Tucson, AZ; sister Marilyn Hull of Harwich, MA; and mother-in-law Doris Patterson in Coxsackie.

Calling hours will be Saturday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville.

The family would like any memorial donations to be made to your local youth sport organization such as Greenville Community Youth League or Greenville Soccer Club.
