Eugene Kristian “Kris” Bartels, 51, of Coxsackie passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2026.

Born on October 12, 1975, in Hudson to Eugene and Marsha Bartels. After graduating from Cairo-Durham High School, he moved on to Hudson Valley Community College where he earned a degree in electrical construction and maintenance. After a short chapter of life in Illinois he returned home to New York, marking the beginning of a new journey. One that led him to his greatest passion as a master electrician, made him a father, and shaped him into the compassionate person we all knew and loved.

Early on, Kris served a leading role in the family business, E.E. Bartels Incorporated, where he entered local homes and businesses to perform electrical work. What became even bigger than the work though, was the conscious effort and expertise he devoted to his community, illustrating not just a dedication to his craft, but a true joy for helping others.

After years in this role, Kris moved on to work in nearby correctional facilities where over time, he wore many hats. Kris would come home with stories, especially during his time as an electric educational instructor, where he was able to combine his hobby of electrical work and his desire to teach others. Most recently, Kris served as Hub Maintenance Supervisor at Hudson Correctional Facility.

Outside of work, he had an immense love for the outdoors. His passion for hunting and fishing began in the backyard of his childhood home where he mastered both his aim and his cast. Kris went on to explore the other backyards life had to offer, moving from just his own, to ones as far as Alaska. Kris captured these moments and the beauty of nature through photography. Thousands of photos of the world around him hold his memory and provide access to viewing nature from his unique perspective.

Kris was known for his willingness to always lend a hand. His smile was infectious and laughter, contagious. He had his own way of loving, but that’s what made him so special. He’s a person made of moments, memories and connections that will keep his spirit alive forever.

He was cherished, he was appreciated, and above all, he was loved.

Kris is predeceased by his sister Heather Schindler.

He is survived by his children Noah, Molly and Grace Bartels; parents Gene and Marsha Bartels; siblings Jared (Crystal) Bartels, Megan (Frank) Arnott; brother-in-law Eddie Schindler; nieces, nephews, cousins and the people who loved him.

Funeral arrangements are private and under the care of Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Memorial contributions in Kris’ honor may be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
