Agnes Ohm passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026.

She was born in Ridgewood, Brooklyn on January 31, 1930. Her parents, Peter Pohler and Louise Pohler (ne Eick) were German emigrants. During the depression Agnes’ mother died and she and her younger brother August moved back to Germany with their father to be closer to relatives. The family moved back to Brooklyn in the late 1930’s and then to Greene County in the 1940’s. There she met and married Guenther Ohm, her trusty companion of 65 years.

The pair raised a family and worked as a team in South Durham running the Sleepy Dutchman Motel for 12 years. In 1976, Agnes started employment at Cairo-Durham High School as the head cook. A few years later she was promoted manager of the school lunch program—her dream job. She retired in 1990 and spent her retirement with Guenther doing the things they loved to do. Travel, caring for their home and gardens, and spoiling their four granddaughters were at the top of their list.

Agnes was predeceased by her two brothers, August and Frederick Pohler, and by Guenther in 2015. She is survived by two sons, Guenther, Jr. and Stephen (wife Barbara). Also surviving are her four dear granddaughters Rebecca, Rachel, Johanna and Valerie and great grandson Benjamin.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the many friends and neighbors who helped them and shared their gifts with Agnes and Guenther. The family would also like to thank the Community Hospice team and the nurses and staff at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

At this time, only a small family gathering is planned to celebrate Agnes’ life. In lieu of flowers the family asks for those so inclined to donate to the Cairo Community Food Pantry which operates out of the Resurrection Lutheran Church at 186 Main Street, Cairo, NY 12413.
