NEW BALTIMORE―A fire that destroyed an abandoned house last week remains under police investigation.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, Cornell Hook & Ladder Fire Company was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 13066 State Route 9W. The long-vacant house was already fully involved when the first firefighters arrived on scene.

“Due to the extent of the fire, exterior operations were established and mutual aid was requested for additional tankers, a ladder truck, rehab, and a cover assignment,” Cornell Hook & Ladder Fire Company reported.

The fire was knocked down in about an hour, but due to what Cornell Hook & Ladder Fire Company described as “suspicious circumstances,” the Greene County Fire Investigation Team was requested to respond.

“Following the investigation, crews remained on scene to extinguish remaining hot spots and soak down debris. Large equipment was brought in to safely knock down the remaining structure, helping to prevent a rekindle and reduce the risk of any further hazardous conditions,” according to Cornell Hook & Ladder Fire Company.

Firefighters remained on scene until approximately 8 p.m.

“Despite the pouring rain, heat, and muggy conditions, members from multiple departments showed up and worked together to get the job done,” Cornell Hook & Ladder Fire Company stated, thanking departments from Medway-Grapeville, Earlton, Coxsackie, Coeymans, Coeymans Hollow, Ravena and Greenville.

Also responding to the scene was Ravena Rescue Squad, Greene County Paramedics, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police.

The house had been unoccupied for decades with no power or electricity. The property is currently for sale as part of two parcels totaling 33 acres and containing two homes and a barn. According to the listing, the houses would have most likely needed to be torn down.

State Police are continuing to investigate the fire and anyone with information is asked to call them at 518-622-8600.
