CATSKILL―A pony named Teddy is recovering from injuries sustained after being struck by a train.
Teddy was one of two miniature horses that got loose from their home in West Camp sometime Tuesday night.
Early Wednesday morning, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about a brown and white pony on the train tracks just south of the Village of Catskill.
Sheriff Peter Kusminsky said Wednesday that the train stopped after crews realized that they had hit the pony and authorities were notified.
According to sheriff’s office, Teddy sustained severe injuries and was taken to Rhinebeck Equine where he is receiving extensive medical attention. He suffered a serious cut to his hindquarter as well as a fractured vertebra and rib.
Kusminsky said that Teddy is now in stable condition and his owners have voluntarily released him to Unbridled Sanctuary where he will continue to recover once released.
Located in Greenville, Unbridled Sanctuary is a non-profit rescue facility that provides rehabilitation, retraining, selective rehoming and, oftentimes, a permanent home to horses, donkeys and mules.
“The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is extremely thankful to Susan Kayne and her team [at Unbridled] for coming out in the early morning hours and assisting us,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“We are very proud of our road patrol members who will go to any length to render aid, not only to humans, but to animals as well. Great work Sergeant Ryan Schrader, Deputy Matthew Monaco, and Deputy Alicia McCourt,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Teddy’s companion, Duke, has reportedly been located as of Wednesday night.
Anyone who would like to help support Unbridled Sanctuary in caring for Teddy or the approximately 65 other equids at the facility can do so on their website at www.susankayne.com/unbridled.html.
