CATSKILL―A Catskill man is facing felony drug charges after police say a traffic stop turned up 352 grams of cocaine.
Sherod Wiggins, 47, is charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance: narcotic drug, a class A-I felony, and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance: intent to sell, a class B felony.
Wiggins is additionally charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors, and was issued multiple uniform traffic tickets.
The charges stem from a traffic stop at approximately 12:11 a.m. on April 15 on the New York State Thruway in the town of Plattekill. According to State Police, troopers with the Troop F Community Stabilization Unit observed a 2023 Honda traveling northbound in alleged violation of vehicle and traffic laws.
Wiggins was identified as the driver and sole occupant of the Honda. During the investigation, K-9 Kell was deployed and alerted positively to the odor of narcotics, troopers said.
“While conducting a search of the vehicle, Wiggins became non-compliant and attempted to flee back into his vehicle. Troopers attempted to take Wiggins into custody; however, he became combative. After a brief struggle, troopers were able to safely place him under arrest,” according to State Police.
A search of Wiggins’ person revealed no contraband. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 352 grams of cocaine contained in a clear plastic bag, troopers said.
Wiggins was remanded to the custody of the Ulster County Jail pending centralized arraignment.
