Paddlers to converge on Hudson River for The Trojan 2026

ATHENS―Some of the Northeast's toughest paddlers will converge on the Village of Athens on Saturday, August 29 as The Trojan 2026 returns to the Hudson River for a 22-mile endurance race that promises fierce competition and a day of family-friendly entertainment along the waterfront.

Unlike traditional races with a fixed starting line, organizers will determine whether competitors launch from Henry Hudson Park in Selkirk or Kingston just two or three days before the event, selecting the course that offers the best combination of wind and tidal current. Regardless of the starting point, all participants will finish in Athens after navigating one of the country's most historic tidal rivers.

The race is open to nearly every type of human-powered watercraft, including stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), surfskis, kayaks, canoes, outrigger canoes, prone paddleboards, dragon boats, and other paddle-powered craft. Organizers are also welcoming rowed boats, making the event one of the region's most inclusive paddle races.

The event is organized by The Hudson Valley Paddling Association, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting paddlesports and public appreciation of the Hudson River. In support of that mission, a fundraiser will be held Thursday, August 27, at Night School in Athens. Community members are invited to stop by, meet organizers and participants, and help support the nonprofit's efforts to continue hosting events like The Trojan and encouraging recreational access to the Hudson River.

Adding to the excitement, competitors will race for substantial prize money. The overall winner of the 22-mile race will receive $1,000, while first-place finishers in qualifying categories can earn $400, provided enough competitors register in each division.

Organizers say the finish line in Athens will be more than just the end of the race. Spectators can expect a festive atmosphere featuring live music, food, vendors, and other activities throughout the day at the Stewart House River Grill, an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to experience the growing paddling community while enjoying the Hudson River waterfront.

Registration for the full Trojan race is $50 in advance, with same-day registration available for $75 if space allows. Race organizers are also arranging boat transportation, shuttle assistance, and even free lodging with local volunteers for some visiting paddlers.

Whether you're an experienced racer or simply looking for a unique way to spend a late-summer Saturday, The Trojan promises an exciting showcase of endurance, strategy, and river navigation while bringing athletes from across the region to Greene County.
