COXSACKIE―A multivehicle crash on the New York State Thruway left two people injured and the southbound lanes shut down for several hours.
It was around 6:47 p.m. on Monday that Greene County 911 began receiving an abundance of calls reporting a serious crash about two miles south of Exit 21B.
According to State Police, the accident started in the northbound lanes when a Honda Accord hit a Freightliner that was hauling automobiles.
The impact sent the Freightliner careening across the center median, through the guardrails and into the southbound lanes where it was then collided with a Volvo SUV.
“Due to the extent of calls, and multiple callers reporting multiple vehicles involved, with multiple patients and a possible vehicle fire, Coxsackie Fire Department along with Coxsackie Ambulance and Greene County Paramedics were dispatched,” according to the Coxsackie Fire Department.
“Due to the complications of gaining access to the scene, West Athens Lime Street Fire Company was requested to the scene and to approach from the south for better access,” the Coxsackie Fire Department noted.
The vehicle fire was ultimately put out with an extinguisher but the extent of the crashes and debris kept firefighters active on scene in bitter cold for several hours. Traffic remained snarled with both southbound lanes of the Thruway were shut down for about three hours.
The driver of the Freightliner, Michael James Tebsherany, 41, of Utica, and driver of the Volvo, Christopher J. Giglio, 23, of Westfield, NJ, were transported to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Honda, identified as Bryan Dorvilier, 19, of Pearl River, did not sustain any reported injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
