Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural Centre to honor Donal Gallagher

EAST DURHAM―Donal Gallagher passed away in 2022 at the age of 78, but his memory lives on in the countless ways he worked to keep Irish culture and heritage alive.

On Saturday, September 5, the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural Centre is honoring Gallagher by dedicating its regulation size Gaelic football, hurling and camogie pitch in his name.

Located on the centre’s grounds, it was one of Gallagher’s greatest Irish cultural achievements in East Durham.

A native of Killybegs in County Donegal, Ireland, Gallagher was a celebrated longtime Gaelic football coach and manager, leading Donegal New York GAA to several senior championships over four decades.

He established Guaranteed Irish, American’s largest Irish import store, more than 40 years ago in the heart of East Durham and was a founder and past president of the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural & Sports Centre.

“He was a point of contact for many Donegal emigrants that travelled to the United States and New York. He has been a legend here in East Durham and to his Irish homeland, his players and friends,” the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural & Sports Centre said in a statement.

This Saturday’s dedication ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. at the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural & Sports Centre, located at 2267 Route 145 in East Durham. All are invited to attend and light refreshments will be served.
