Memorial Day parades and ceremonies in Greene County

GREENE COUNTY―Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who died in service to the United States during peacetime and war.

Across Greene County, there are multiple parades and ceremonies to honor the lives and legacies of those who served and sacrificed for our country.

The following observances will take place on Sunday, May 24:

American Legion Bunt Brewer Post 165 will host a memorial service from 1-2 p.m. at the Memorial Monument in front of the high school on State Route 23A in Tannersville. There will be guest speakers, an elementary school chorus performance and a wreath laying ceremony.

Greenville American Legion Post 291’s Color Guard will be conducting Memorial Day Services at 9 a.m. at the South Westerlo Veteran Monument; at 9:15 a.m. at the Westerlo Veterans Park; at 9:30 a.m. at Rensselaerville Veterans Monument; at 10 a.m. at the Medusa Veterans Monument; at 10:30 a.m. at the Freehold Cemetery; at 10:45 a.m. at the Greenville Cemetery; at 11 a.m. at the Field of Flags in front of the Scott M. Ellis Elementary School; and at 11:15 a.m. at Locust Ceremony.

The following observances will take place on Monday, May 25:

Athens

Parade steps off at 9 a.m. from the ballfield on Route 385 and proceeds south to the Memorial Triangle, then up Second Street to Athens American Legion Post 187.

Cairo

Parade steps off at 11 a.m. from the area of Acra Building Supply and proceeds up Main Street to Angelo Canna Town Park where American Legion Mohican Post 983 will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial.

Catskill

Parade steps off at 1:30 p.m. from Water Street. Honeyford Memorial American Legion Post 110 will hold a ceremony on the steps of the Greene County Courthouse at 2 p.m. with Undersheriff Tracey Quinn, a United States Marine, serving as the guest speaker.

Coxsackie

Parade steps off at 11 a.m. at the intersection of Apple Blossom and Mansion streets and proceeds east on Mansion Street to McQuade Park. Presented by the American Legion Post 166, there will be military and antique vehicles, guest speakers and live music. Food and refreshments along with parade route.

Durham

There will be a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at Brandow Memorial Park on Clay Hill Road. All are welcome to attend.

Greenville

Hosted by American Legion Post 291, the parade steps off at 10:15 a.m. from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church parking lot on State Route 81. It will march to the intersection of State Route 32 and end in the south parking lot of Scott M. Ellis Elementary School. A Memorial Day service will follow at the gazebo in Veterans Park.

Prattsville

Parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Main Street and ends at the Town Green where Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post 1327 will hold a ceremony.
