HUNTER―Catskill Mountain Foundation and Maude Adams Theater Hub present Kimberly Akimbo by David Lindsay-Abaire, the original play that inspired the Tony Award-winning musical. Partnering once again with Scribner’s Catskill Lodge at 161 Scribner Hollow Road in Hunter, Kimberly will take over their magnificent Apex Lounge from March 26-28.

Kimberly Akimbo, written by David Lindsay-Abaire and published originally in 2001, is a story following a 16-year-old girl with a fatal disease that causes her to age rapidly. While only in her mid-teens, she appears 70. Kimberly has to balance her affliction with a new town, a dysfunctional family, and a budding teen romance that’s sure to strike a sentimental chord with any audience.

Directed by Amy Scheibe, an experienced director who also serves as the executive director of Catskill Mountain Foundation, this sidesplitting comedy is rated NC-17. No punches are being pulled at the Apex this coming March. Scheibe will be joined by several regional favorites like Jessica Gibbons, Cara Dantzig, Molly Gaebe, Brian Flynn, and Jake Shipley.

These exceptional artists are pushing boundaries, balancing poignancy with total moral bankruptcy and nostalgic 80s fun. Set in Bogota, New Jersey, this family of foul-mouthed characters navigates the difficulties of suburban life while juggling accountability and family secrets. Featuring an expecting and hypochondriac mother, an alcoholic father, a grifter aunt, a Dungeons and Dragons dweeb, and a chronic illness teen, this gaggle of personalities is sure to bring tears to your eyes. Whether it's from laughter or something else remains to be seen.

The Apex Lounge, the special venue being utilized in this particular production, is part of Scribner's hotel complex. Originally constructed and opened in 2025, the Apex is a 12 sided solarium built with a vaulted ceiling, large bright windows, and furnished spectacularly with Mid-Century Modern lounge chairs and couches. This striking space is regularly available for Scribner’s guests and features many activities such as yoga classes, weddings, corporate events, and occasionally local theater.

This will be the second play staged by Maude Adams Theater Hub in the Apex, the first being True West by Sam Sheppard which premiered last March. That sold out production was so popular that Catskill Mountain Foundation and Scribner’s have partnered once again to bring joy to the community, and to breathe life into a space so deserving of an audience.

The first of the three performances, Thursday, March 26, starts at 7 p.m. and solely features the performance. However, the shows on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28, begin at 6 p.m. and feature a cocktail hour and buffet catered by Scribner’s own Prospect Restaurant. Parking is available on location at 161 Scribner Hollow Road and shuttles are available from Scribner’s Lodge.
