HUDSON―Born on May 4, 1826, Frederic Edwin Church is widely regarded as the most famous American landscape artist of the 19th century.
Church’s paintings can be found in more than 70 public art museums across the United States and Europe, but his greatest work is perched high above the treetops with panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River.
Known as Olana, the Persian-inspired mansion stands as a testament to Church’s vision and will be the site of a May 2 public celebration of Church’s 200th birthday.
Hosted by the Olana Partnership, the free event features an afternoon of art, music and nature activities at the historic site.
“This special day will not only be a celebration of Frederic Church, but of how everyone can find different ways to connect with the artist and Olana: through nature, artmaking, music, or diverse cultural traditions―some of the artist’s favorite things,” said Carolyn Keogh, The Olana Partnership’s director of education.
The event will kick off at the Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape at noon with the unveiling of a special 200th birthday gift from The Olana Partnership to Olana.
Beginning at 1 p.m., there will be live musical performances on the East Lawn reflecting the global influences that shaped Church’s artistic vision. Performances include mariachi music by Trovadores de América at 1:30 p.m., music from the Middle East by El Asdiqaa at 2:30 p.m., and Ecuadorian folk music and dance by Andes Manta at 3:30 p.m.
In addition, the festive celebration will feature free access to Olana’s historic interiors and guided landscape tours, pollinator walks, tours of the mingled flower garden, activities with master gardeners, farm-based and hands-on activities for all ages, inspired by the artist’s love of art, nature, and global travel.
Additional highlights include family-friendly fun such as a free photobooth, visits with small friendly farm animals, and giveaways from regional favorites including Stewart’s ice cream and Bjorn Qorn homegrown non-GMO popcorn. A selection of local food vendors will offer refreshments for purchase.
The day will conclude at 5 p.m. with a special book talk by Victoria Johnson, author of the first biography of Frederic Church timed with his 200th birthday titled, Glorious Country: How Frederic Church Brought the World to America and America to the World, presented in the Frederic Church Center for Art & Landscape. The talk will explore Church’s far-reaching impact and global perspective, followed by a book signing. This program is free and open to the public; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Olana is the most important artist’s home, studio, and designed landscape in the United States,” notes The Olana Partnership, the primary programming entity at the site.
Olana State Historic Site, administered and operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, is a designated National Historic Landmark. It is one of the most visited sites in the state, welcoming 170,000 visitors annually to the house and 250-acre artist-designed landscape.
The birthday celebration is part of the broader Frederic Church 200 initiative, a yearlong commemoration that offers a comprehensive reappraisal of Church as a prominent public figure concerned with the key issues of the 19th century, from new scientific thinking to slavery and the preservation of green spaces for public good.
Olana will also be a stop on the free shuttle for the Hudson Children’s Book Festival happening next door at Columbia-Greene Community College.
