GREENE COUNTY―Drivers filling up their tanks in Greene County were paying an average of $4.42 a gallon on Monday, about four cents less than the statewide average.
The nation’s average price of gasoline has increased 38.2 cents over the last week and also stands at $4.42 per gallon, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
The national average increased 32.6 cents from a month ago and is $1.31 per gallon higher than a year ago. Across New York, Monday’s average of $4.46 per gallon is up $1.36 from a year ago.
Across the country, the average price of diesel rose 21.3 cents in the last week and stands at $5.621 per gallon. In New York, diesel was at $5.93 per gallon on Monday, up from $3.89 a year ago.
“Gasoline prices rose in every state over the last week, with some of the most significant and fastest increases concentrated in the Great Lakes, where states like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois saw sharp spikes, while Wisconsin experienced more modest gains,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“At the same time, diesel prices surged to new records in parts of the region, with some areas touching the $6-per-gallon mark,” he added.
De Haan said that while refinery outages were a key driver behind those outsized increases, “early signs of improvement could help ease some of the most extreme price pressures in the Great Lakes in the days ahead.”
“Beyond the region, markets are also digesting a wave of new developments—including OPEC+ raising production for June and President Trump outlining a plan to free stranded ships—which could help restore some supply,” De Haan said.
Trump said the U.S. will work to guide commercial vessels stranded by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The operation, dubbed Project Freedom, began Monday.
However, De Haan said, “the outlook remains highly fluid, and while some localized relief may emerge, broader price volatility is likely to persist in the near term.”
Crude prices have gone significantly higher, with momentum carrying into early Monday trading. WTI crude oil rose $3.39 to $105.33 per barrel, up nearly $10 from last Monday’s $95.94 level, while Brent crude climbed $3.86 to $112.03 per barrel, also jumping from $106.98 a week ago.
The states with the lowest average prices: Georgia ($3.83), Oklahoma ($3.87), and Louisiana ($3.87).
The states with the highest average prices: California ($6.07), Washington ($5.62), and Hawaii ($5.59).
Biggest weekly changes: Indiana (+83.3¢), Ohio (+78.1¢), Michigan (+68.0¢), Illinois (+49.3¢), Wisconsin (+44.8¢).
