Columbia-Greene Humane Society needs a new backup generator

HUDSON―The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA (CGHS/SPCA) has launched a campaign to raise $40,000 to replace its aging emergency backup generator, a critical piece of equipment that helps ensure the safety and well-being of the animals in its care during power outages and emergencies.

After years of dependable service, the shelter's current generator has reached the end of its operational life. Replacement parts are no longer available, manufacturer support has ended, and repairs can no longer guarantee reliable operation.

For an organization that provides shelter, medical care, and protection to thousands of animals each year, dependable backup power is not a luxury, but a necessity.

"When the power goes out, the animals in our care still need heat, ventilation, lighting, refrigeration for medications, and access to critical medical equipment," said Ron Perez, President and CEO of CGHS/SPCA.

"We may be in the middle of surgery or caring for a critically ill animal when an outage occurs. A dependable generator isn't simply a backup plan. It's an essential part of providing safe, uninterrupted care,” said Perez.

The need for reliable emergency power extends beyond the shelter's daily operations. As a member of the community’s Emergency Disaster Management and Response team, the CGHS/SPCA plays an important role in both Columbia and Greene Counties during severe weather events, natural disasters, and other community emergencies that affect animals. Maintaining uninterrupted operations helps ensure the organization remains prepared to assist animals and support emergency response efforts when they are needed most.

The new generator will provide reliable emergency power for years to come, helping protect animal housing areas, medical equipment, refrigeration systems, communications infrastructure, and other essential services throughout the facility.

"This is one of those projects that most people never see, but its importance cannot be overstated," Perez said. "When storms strike or power fails, our responsibility to the animals does not stop. We must be ready to provide the same level of care and protection regardless of the circumstances."

To recognize those whose generosity helps make this project possible, donors who contribute $1,000 or more toward the Generator Replacement Campaign will have their names displayed on a plaque at the shelter.

Gifts of all sizes will help ensure that the organization can continue protecting animals and serving the community during emergencies for years to come.
