CAIRO―A Cairo man is behind bars after a three-year-old was found so severely injured that she was airlifted to an area hospital.
Lameik Shakur Wilson, 24, was arrested by the Greene County Sheriff's Office on Thursday and charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
Around 4:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Greene County 911 dispatched EMS to an apartment on Main Street in Cairo for a report of a three-year-old girl found unconscious and bleeding from the mouth, according to scanner reports.
The child was noted to have several visible injuries and was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Albany Medical Center, the sheriff’s office said in a statement on Thursday.
“It is alleged that Wilson intentionally caused serious physical injury to the child,” the sheriff’s office stated.
The child remains hospitalized and is listed in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.
Wilson was arraigned in Catskill Town Court and remanded to the Greene County Jail without bail.
Wilson is reportedly in a relationship with the child’s mother.
The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with possible related information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 518-943-3300.
Greene County Paramedics along with personnel from Durham Ambulance and Town of Cairo Ambulance treated the child at the scene before she was transported by the LifeNet helicopter.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Greene County District Attorney’s Office and New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit.
Local law enforcement is familiar with Wilson, public records show.
He was arrested by the Town of Cairo Police Department on May 21, 2025, and charged with public lewdness and disorderly conduct. At that time, he was issued an appearance ticket to Cairo Town Court.
On July 3, Wilson was arrested in Cairo by State Police and charged with two counts of misdemeanor forcible touching. He was arraigned and sent to the Greene County Jail in lieu of bail.
According to state records, Wilson also served 22 months in prison on a conviction in Columbia County for aggravated harassment of an employee by an inmate. He was released on February 28, 2025. It was not immediately clear why Wilson was incarcerated at the time of that offense.
