CAIRO―After eight years at Cairo-Durham, Elementary Principal Christopher Stein is heading south.
In a letter to the community, Stein announced “with a full and grateful heart” that he has accepted an elementary school principal position closer to home and will be stepping down at the end of the current school year.
Stein was hired on May 21 by the Rondout Valley Central School District in Ulster County to lead Kerhonkson Elementary School. He starts the new position on July 1.
Stein said that working in Cairo-Durham has been one of the greatest honors of his career.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an incredible staff, supportive families and amazing students,” he wrote. “Together, we have built strong relationships, celebrated accomplishments, overcome challenges an created a school culture centered on learning, growth and positivity.”
In 2023, Stein was named the Firefighters Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) Teacher of the Year.
While Stein said he is excited for the new chapter in his career, leaving Cairo-Durham is not easy.
“The relationships and memories I’ve made here will always hold a special place in my heart, and a part of me will always be a Cairo-Durham Mustang,” he added.
Stein will remain on until the end of the school year and said he looks forward to “continuing to support our students and staff and helping ensure a smooth transition.”
