Ashland to host 138th Greene County fireman’s convention next week

ASHLAND―Firefighters from across the county and beyond will come together in Ashland next week for the 138th Greene County Volunteer Fireman’s Association Convention.

The multi-day event includes a memorial service, meetings, dinners and two parades.

It’s a significant year for the Ashland Fire Department. They are not only hosting the convention but also celebrating their 100th anniversary.  

On Wednesday, September 9 is the Greene County Volunteer Fireman’s Association (GCVFA) Ladies Auxiliary Dinner and Installation of Officers at the Ashland Town Hall. The following night is the GCVFA Dinner, Memorial Service and Annual Meeting, also at town hall.

On Friday, September 11 is the Mardi Gras parade, a lighthearted and fun event where firefighters dress in costume and decorate elaborate floats. This year’s theme is the “America 250.”

Lineup for the Mardi Gras parade is on State Route 23, west of Carrington Road. It steps off at 6 p.m. and ends at the Ashland Town Park where there will be food, entertainment and the awarding of trophies.

Then on Saturday, September 12 is the annual dress parade when hundreds of firefighters and auxiliary members from more than 30 departments will march along with apparatus, bands, color guards, and local dignitaries. The tradition began as a way to honor and show respect for departed members.

The dress parade lines up on State Route 23, west of County Route 17 and steps off at 2 p.m. It marches to the Ashland Town Park where there will again be food and entertainment, as well as an awards ceremony.

The public is invited to both parades. Parking is available at the Ashland Town Park and handicap parking will be at the town hall.
