Annual BBQ to raise money for local disabled vets

CAIRO―On Saturday, August 8, hundreds of people are expected to pack Lynch's Pot O' Gold Restaurant & Campground for some mouthwatering barbecue, cold drinks, and a great cause.
A true community effort now in its twelfth year, the Helping Our Vets BBQ is a fundraiser for disabled veterans. To date, it has raised well over one hundred thousand dollars that Pot O’ Gold owner KrisAnne Lynch explained stays right here in the local community.
“It is truly a day for vets,” said Lynch.
The event is co-hosted by American Legion Mohican Post 983 of Cairo and Catskill Elks Lodge Post 1341. All money raised assists disabled vets when they need a helping hand with anything from medical expenses to heating their homes in the winter.
The idea for the fundraiser came from Lynch’s father, Morty Lynch, who is a U.S. Navy veteran himself.
Last year alone brought in nearly $20,000 and it would not be possible, Lynch said, without the generosity of the community.
“So many people help and not just amazing people, but amazing vets, too. They donate and buy tickets,” said Lynch.
Throughout the day, Lynch said they will serve around 350 people who enjoy chicken, baked potato and fresh corn on the cob.
Those attending the barbecue will also have an opportunity to purchase 50/50 tickets, try their chances at an assortment of raffle items and win great prizes.
As always, local band Dusk ‘Til Dawn is also donating their time and talents to provide music.
“People and businesses from across the county and beyond are really great about donating and coming out to support us,” Lynch said. “There are too many people to mention.”
Doors open at 1 p.m. and tickets are $20 at the door. Businesses that would like to donate a raffle item or gift certificate are asked to kindly contact Lynch at 518-755-5832. T-shirts are also available for $25 by stopping in Lynch’s Pot O’ Gold Restaurant and Campground at 373 Old Route 23 in Cairo.
“This is important to me because of my dad,” Lynch said. “I’ll probably do it forever.”
