CATSKILL―Recently elected Catskill Village Trustee Thomas Boomhower has thrown his hat in the ring for the 102nd Assembly District.

A Democrat who announced his campaign this week, Boomhoweris now the fifth candidate entering the race for the seat currently held by Assemblyman Chris Tague (R-Schoharie).

Boomhower, 29, says he is “positioning himself as the candidate most equipped to address the concerns facing Upstate New Yorkers.”

“The fact of the matter is we’re facing a cost of living crisis. Life has become unaffordable for too many of us. It costs too much for people to provide for their families, to put food on their tables, or heat their homes… and people are being priced out of their homes, out of their communities,” he said.

Boomhower moved to Catskill in 2019 after growing up in Athens and attending Coxsackie-Athens schools. He holds a master’s degree in American history from SUNY Albany as well as a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and behavioral sciences from Russell Sage College.

He currently serves as senior director of program management at Upstate Capital and previously worked as an economic development specialist for Greene County.

“Smart economic development is critical for ensuring our communities and small businesses remain viable and competitive,” said Boomhower. “When you take a holistic approach to the issues facing our region, with a commitment to centering local voices, we can work together to ensure our friends and neighbors are kept in business and not priced out of the places they call home.”

In addition to his focus on fighting the cost of living crisis by strengthening the economic outlook of our communities, Boomhower said he looks to address the scarcity in comprehensive healthcare and childcare options for families across the 102nd District.

Tague has been the incumbent since 2018 and in November announced that he will be pursuing the 51st State Senate District seat in 2026.

Since then, Democratic Delhi Village Councilmember Janet Tweed, Republican Windham Town Supervisor Thomas Hoyt, Conservative Richard Amedure of Rensselaerville and Cairo Democratic Chairperson Mary Finneran have also declared candidacy for Tague’s seat.

The district includes all of Greene and Schoharie counties, along with parts of Delaware, Albany, Otsego and Ulster counties.
